EXCELLENCE IN PAIN PRACTICE (EPP) AWARD
TO A PAIN CENTRE
BACKGROUND AND GUIDELINES
The World Institute of Pain (WIP) launched the Excellence in Pain Practice (EPP) Award in 2010 to promote the highest standards of pain practice around the world through a recognition program for Pain Centers. This program supports WIP’s mission of fostering the exchange of medical science in the field of interventional pain management, encouraging medical research, and creating opportunities for continued learning in the most up-to-date technical procedures.
The EPP Award recognizes Pain Centers that excel in providing education and training to young fellows and physicians in the field of pain practice. Pain Centers may apply for and be considered for recognition in up to three areas: pain center achievements, training and research, and the impact of the Pain Center to the specialty of pain practice.
OBJECTIVE AND AIM
The goal of the EPP Award program is to define and recognize the criteria of excellence of Pain Centers in the areas of pain center achievements, education and research, and impact of the Pain Center on the specialty of pain practice. Information derived from written application materials, and a physical site visit performed by an FIPP-certified physician, are considered by the EPP Awards Committee in its final determination of merit for each Pain Center applicant.
The application for EPP Award consideration is initiated voluntarily by the Pain Center, and the application must either be completed by the FIPP director of the pain center or have the endorsement of the FIPP certificate holder practicing in the Pain Center.

- How is the material evaluated for eligibility?
Due diligence of the application is conducted by WIP staff.
- Who receives this application for consideration?
Excellence in Pain Practice Award Committee after due diligence is performed by the WIP Secretariat who receives the application.
PROCEDURE FOR EVALUATION OF APPLICATION
When the application is received for the Excellence in Pain Practice Award, the WIP Secretariat verifies the completeness of the following materials and signs off on each prior to sending the application materials to the Chair and the members of EPP Awards Committee.
- The application is complete and signed off by the Secretariat.
- All supporting documents are enclosed and complete and are signed off by the Secretariat.
- The completed application is forwarded by the Secretariat to the EPP committee Chair and members.
- Incomplete applications are reported to the Chair with a description of the action being taken to complete the application.
PROCEDURE FOR SELECTION OF THE AWARD BY THE EPP AWARDS COMMITTEE
- The Chair and the members of the committee acknowledge receipt of the application and the date received.
- All committee members will utilize a grading system for evaluation of the application and send their comments for acceptance/rejection to the Chair.
- The Chairman will review the majority decision from the committee members and then informs the Executive Board of the final outcome of the application. If votes are equal then the chairman has final one extra vote.
- The committee will initially determine the eligibility of the Pain Center, based on the documents received.
- If satisfactory, the committee will nominate a qualified WIP member to make arrangements with the said Pain Center to physically inspect the site and activities of the applicant.
- Appropriate notice will be given by both parties for the inspection date.
- Both the Pain Center and the Inspector will receive from the WIP Secretariat an inspection manual to use to prepare for and administer the inspection of the Pain Center.
- The Pain Center will be invoiced by WIP for $1,000.00 USD prior to the site visit to cover both direct and indirect costs associated with scheduling the site visit.
- The inspector, who will be chosen from within the WIP Section of the applying Pain Center whenever possible, will be reimbursed by WIP for the cost of a two-day visit, including economy class airfare, two nights’ hotel accommodation, and per diem expenses. Total travel expenses shall not exceed $1,000 unless approved by the WIP Secretariat.
- The inspector will complete The EPP Award Scoring Summary Sheet and submit it together with any supporting documentation to the WIP Secretariat within seven (7) days of the site inspection.
- The EPP Award Committee makes the final decision as to whether the Pain Center should be approved for the award. This information will be communicated to the President of WIP if the Pain Center is approved for the award.
- If the Pain Center is deficient in certain criteria for approval of this award, the committee Chair will communicate this to the Pain Center applicant for further action.
- The President of WIP will send a formal letter to the Pain Center congratulating them for their successful application.
- The award will be valid for five years after acceptance and the Pain Center will need to apply for renewal.
- The WIP Secretariat will prepare a standardized letter for either acceptance or rejection of each application on behalf of the President, who informs the applicant of the outcome.
- The awards are valid for five years
- Pain Centers that receive this award will be obliged to pay a $1,000 certification fee to WIP for each five-year period.
PROCEDURE FOR AWARD CEREMONY
- Award recipients are acknowledged in all official WIP publications, print and electronic media, including but not limited to newsletter, website, and Congress bulletins.
- Award recipients are recognized in a special ceremony at the next World Congress.
- Award will consist of wall plaque and a certificate with the WIP logo
- All accepted applications are archived indefinitely.
- All rejected applications are retained for five years and discarded if no subsequent action is initiated.
DISSEMINATION OF THE EPP AWARD TO THE PUBLIC
- Advertise the award recipients in the WIP newsletter and Pain Practice journal.
- Advertise the award recipients on the WIP website.
- Recognize the award recipients at the World Congress.
- Pain Centers recognized for providing patients with service excellence under the Excellence in Pain Practice (EPP) Award program are not recommendations or endorsements of any facility or practitioner for a particular purpose, but are based on specific criteria and inspection of the center’s practice.
